Secondary Market

Secondary market is commonly named as ‘stock market’. It includes all major stock exchanges around the world, like Nasdaq or the New York Stock Exhange. What makes the difference between secondary market and other markets is that, here, traders trade among themselves.

Investors trade stocks without the involvement of the issuing company. Let’s say if you go to buy Apple stock, you are dealing only with another investor who owns shares in Apple. Apple is not part of the transaction directly.

The secondary market can be devided into
two specialized categories:

Auction Market

In this market, all stakeholders that want to trade securities precipitate in one area and make public the prices at which they are willing to buy and sell. Buy and Sell prices are referred differently as bid and ask prices. The point is that an efficient market should bring together all interested parties and making their prices public. The best example of an auction market is the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

Dealer Market

A dealer market doesn’t require parties to be in the same location. Interested parties are coming together through electronic means. The dealers keep a security and stay ready to buy or sell with other market participants. Dealers make profit through the spread, or the difference between the buy and sell price. An example of a dealer market is the Nasdaq, in which the dealers provide firm bid and ask prices at which they are willing to buy and sell a security.
